New York-based Australian pianist and teaching artist, Dr. Joanne Kang, has been praised for her fleet-fingered virtuosity and stylistic versatility receiving rave reviews for performances of works from the Baroque to Contemporary. A prolific prizewinner of national and international competitions and scholarships, Joanne enjoys an international career as a solo and chamber performing and recording artist. Collaboration highlights include performances with The American String Quartet, The Afield, American Modern Opera Company, Rocket City New Music, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Julia Wolfe, Gabriela Ortiz, members of the Silk Road Ensemble, and Kaija Saariaho for the world premiere of her final chamber composition, Semafor for eight instruments. Joanne was the pianist of Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect (2020-23): “one of the strongest ensembles in the city”- New York Classical Review and has appeared on the stages of the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Town Hall, Perth Concert Hall, Seoul Arts Center, Carnegie Hall, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Lincoln Center, and the Guggenheim Museum, among others.
Joanne holds Associate, Licentiate, and Fellowship in Music diplomas from AMEB Australia, and Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, where she was the recipient of the Harold and Helene Schonberg Pianist and International Advisory Board Scholarships. Her primary mentors include the late Nikolay Evrov and the late Phillip Kawin. She was awarded Manhattan School of Music’s Harold Bauer Award in 2015 and the 2023 Helen Cohn Award recognizing an outstanding DMA graduate. Her doctoral thesis explores the history of Ukrainian classical music and analyzes the preludes of contemporary Ukrainian composer Boris Lyatoshynsky.
As a passionate music educator, Joanne is dedicated to promoting empowerment and community accessibility in music education. She inspires her students by nurturing their self-confidence, self-expression, curiosity, and creativity. Joanne has curated and performed numerous interactive concerts for the broader New York community and NYC public schools. As the assistant to the late Prof. Phillip Kawin and a Doctoral teaching fellow in the Keyboard Skills department, she taught undergraduate and graduate piano and keyboard skills classes, individual piano lessons, and studio classes at the Manhattan School of Music. From 2020 to 2024 Joanne held residencies at Skidmore College, NY with Ensemble Connect, teaching piano lessons and coaching chamber groups. Joanne currently serves as the Director of Absolute Piano Lessons Studio in Brooklyn.
Video recordings for Carnegie Hall’s YouTube channel include various self- and live-recorded concerts with Ensemble Connect, as well as music videos produced by FourTen Media, showcasing Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio and a commissioned piano trio arrangement of the spiritual "Deep River” by Grammy Award-winning Venezuelan composer Gabriel Chakarji.
Album recordings include “1Q84” under ODDSOUND records (2024) which explores contemporary classical chamber and jazz crossover works for cello, piano, drums, and bass. This album, featuring cellist Sahara von Hattenberger and McGill University Schulich School faculty Jim Doxas and Adrian Vedady on drums and bass, explores the crossover genre through the works of French composer Claude Bolling and newly commissioned quartets by Malcolm Sailor, Jeffrey Fong, and Grammy-nominated composer Remi LeBoeuf. In 2025 Joanne joins Canadian group Duo Étrange on their upcoming ATMA Classique album featuring soprano, cello, and piano works by André Previn, Luna Pearl Woolf and newly commissioned works by Canadian composers Airat Ichmouratov and Laurence Jobidon.
